About Us

Mpanshya Camp and Trails is an eco-campsite situated in the Flamponje Community Forest Area and is run by the local community. All proceeds go to supporting the community and into protecting the forest. The surrounding area offers access to biking and hiking trails, mountain climbing, pedestrian trails, birdwatching and rock-climbing.

Situated in the Rufunsa district of Zambia, home of the seasonal and elusive Pitta bird and nestled in the valley of the Chikwenya Hills, this area offers visitors a unique view of one of Lusaka's less remote rural provinces. 150 kms or +/- 3hours drive from Lusaka, on Great East Road. Our eco-campsite provides an ideal setting for those looking to reconnect with the environment while enjoying immersive, educational activities.

Explore biking and hiking trails, discover rare birds like the seasonal Pitta, or engage in eco-volunteering opportunities that help preserve the local ecosystem. Mpanshya Camp and Trails encourages visitors to take only memories and leave nothing but footprints.

By promoting regenerative tourism, Mpanshya Camp and Trails is committed to revitalizing the local environment and community. Visitors are encouraged to participate in sustainable practices that support both the natural surroundings and local livelihoods, ensuring that the beauty of this region is preserved for future generations.

On-site:

4 campgrounds + shaded food preparation areas (self-camp)
2 large / 6 man & 4 medium / 4 man family canvas tents for hire (spacious and sturdy including cot beds and mattresses)
4 designated ablution blocks (hot & cold showers, flushing toilet, hand basin)
Built-in cooking areas (barbecue + grid)

Dishwashing (plumbed) area with sink (mountain water)

Description of terrain:

Elevation Chikwenya Hills Total climb 768 meters (305 meters elevation difference)

(options for Bike, Trail or Run suitable for children aged 12+ of village loop +/- 10 kms)

Terrain: Mountain terrain with occasional loose stones and/or steep gradients (runners will need to power-walk in certain areas). Recommended for experienced riders, and intermediate and experienced trail runners.
